Serena Inn Hotel (Luxury)

The Serena Inn justifies its reputation as one the best hotel in Zanzibar. It has joined the ranks of the world's finest resorts as a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Located in the heart of Stone Town, this stunning property is set in two historic seafront buildings that have been integrated and restored into a unique single property echoing the grandeur of days past. All the bedrooms overlook the azure waters of the Indian Ocean and the lazy dhows that plough beneath the restaurant’s windows. Mbweni Ruins Hotel (Luxury)

If you would like to see the sights of Stone Town, the surrounding palaces and spice gardens, but without the noise and hassle of being in town, then the Mbweni Ruins is a great retreat. Mbweni offers thirteen air-conditioned suites, each furnished in distinctive Zanzibari style. Each suite is close to the swimming pool and secluded beach with a balcony overlooking the sea. All of the rooms are air-conditioned, with ceiling fans with verandas, except for the Frangipani Suite, which has a bigger main bedroom instead.

The crystal clear fresh water pool on the edge of the beach connects the rooms to the restaurant and bar, where traditional spicy foods and seafood delicacies are served. The view from the Raintree restaurant sweeps across the Indian Ocean to the islands of Bawe and Chumbe. Ruins from the era of Livingstone can be explored in their lush botanic garden setting. The luscious gardens, gradually leading down from the Ruins to the beach are home and paradise to many species of butterflies and birds. Mangroves dot the sea, providing a habitat for jeweled fish and birds. The garden is established as a flourishing Botanic Garden, which includes over 650 plant species – including 120 species of palms.

The Africa House (Intermediate)

Tembo House Hotel (Intermediate)

The hotel is ideally situated for exploring Stone Town on foot and sampling its myriad wonderful restaurants. Decorated throughout in traditional Swahili style the spacious en-suite rooms are fully air-conditioned. Most of the rooms have balconies over looking the beach or the swimming pool courtyard. Each bedroom is self contained, air conditioned, equipped with fridge, telephone satellite TV and hair dryer.

The Bahari Restaurant, which offers excellent local as well international cuisine. Note that the hotel is Muslim owned and therefore does not sell alcoholic drinks - but there are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby.

Dhow Palace Hotel (Intermediate)

The Dhow Palace is converted from a former Omani mansion, with internal balconies around a central courtyard with fountain and bedecked with palm trees and creepers. The hotel is furnished with traditional furniture and fabrics which gives it an authentic Zanzibar, Arab, African feel. Its 16 self-contained and spacious rooms are furnished with traditional Sultan-size four-poster beds. All rooms are equipped with aircon, minibars, satellite TV, and tastefully appointed with Zanzibari artifacts. The rooms have large balconies overlooking an attractive and cool central courtyard or the swimming pool.

The Hotel does not serve alcohol but there are bars and restaurants a stone throw away.

Chavda Hotel (Intermediate)

Comfortable and centrally located in Stone Town, this renovated merchant’s house is a good option for budget travelers. It has an attractive entrance with oriental lamps and beautiful wood carved doors with traditional brass knobs.

The hotel has 16 well-appointed rooms spread over three floors and overlooks the Roman Catholic Church, which is the oldest in town. Clean and comfortable, the en-suite bedrooms are decorated simply with good reproduction Zanzibari furniture. There's a four-poster bed, side table and cupboard. You’ll find all the modern conveniences - air conditioner, mini-bar fridge, safe and satellite television.

The restaurant and bar situated on the rooftop. The rooftop restaurant is decorated with latticework and features marble-topped tables, antique chairs and dark-wood railings.
